Remembrance Sunday 2018 – 11th November
This year, on Sunday 11th November, it will be precisely 100 years since the guns ceased firing and World War One came to an end. In order to mark this Centenary the Orpington branch of the British Legion will be starting their Parade and Act of Remembrance at our War Memorial at 10:40am (not 9:30am as in previous years.) This will enable the people of Orpington to mark a two minute silence precisely at 11am.
Given that it has been our custom at St John’s Church for our Minister and many of our Uniformed groups to take part in this Parade, our Church Meeting agreed that we should alter the arrangements for our own Church Parade Service this year. After much discussion and consultation with the Uniformed Groups, the programme this year will be as follows:
9:30 — 10:15am: Church Parade Service at St John’s United Reformed Church, led by our Minister with the Scout Troop.
10:15am: Those who wish to join the Parade at the War Memorial will make their way to the Town Centre.
Coffee will be served in The Link to any who are not able or do not wish to go.
10:45 — 11:15am: A brief Act of Remembrance at St John's United Reformed Church, incorporating the two minutes’ silence at 11am led by Jenny Sheehan.
You are welcome to join either or both of the services at St John’s Church but please bear in mind, if you plan to come later in the morning, that many of the roads will be blocked off around the Orpington War Memorial from about 9:30am onwards.
